"Fly Fishing on Lake St. Clair"
Did you know that Lake St. Clair, located in "our own backyard", is one of the
top 3 smallmouth fisheries in the world;
the #1 Muskie fishery in the world and rated one of the top 100 fly fishing
destinations in the world? These statements are true and just a few of the
interesting facts
Captain Brian Meszaros talked about during his presentation
"Fly Fishing on Lake St. Clair" at Hank's on Thursday, July 12th.
Captain Brian started at the age of 15 and in 1992 started Great Lakes Fly
Fishing; a guide service on Lake St. Clair. Captain Brian said "we are
truly blessed to have the best fresh water fisheries in the world right here in
our backyard." With 430 square miles of lake to fish, St. Clair is mostly
sand, gravel and clay and average depth is less than 15 feet. Home to
numerous plant and animal species, this lake is particularly important to the
migrating waterfowl and the Great Lakes fishery. From blue gills, chinook,
crayfish, carp, perch, white bass, large and smallmouth bass, pike and muskies,
it's a fisherman's paradise. There are muskies in Lake St. Clair over 42".
Captain Brian recommends you use a 7/8 weight rod while fishing lake St. Clair
as it will handle almost any fish there.
97% of this lake, fed from Lake Huron, moves 183,000 cubic feet of water per
second and experiences a total changeover every 7 days. There is no
thermocline in the lake, which means the water does not stratify separating the
cooler and warmer waters when changes in the climate occur. In other
bodies of water when this occurs fish can get sick. This is just another
great fact about the lake that is not one of the "Great Lakes", but it is a
GREAT Lake. With gas prices where they are, why not head east instead of
north the next time you want to get away and fish.
